Scientists have made progress in establishing the location of the earliest surviving human art.
British and Spanish researchers have determined that an ancient cave painting in northern Spain is likely the world's oldest. It dates back more than 40,000 years.
The team reported its findings in the U.S. magazine "Science."
The researchers used a radioactive dating method on paintings found in 11 caves in northern Spain. They included the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Altamira and El Castillo.
The scientists found that a painting of a red disk in the El Castillo Cave is about 40,800 years old. They say that's around the time when human ancestors reached Europe from the African continent.
Previously, paintings in the Chauvet Cave in France were thought to be the world's oldest. They date back about 36,000 years.
