A SECOND MONA LISA?
Swiss foundation holds a very vital evidence unlike the other group of researchers.
The origins of the art world's most enigmatic smile just got more mysterious.
Members of a Swiss foundation unveiled what they believe is an earlier version of Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa."
Foundation spokespersons say the canvas painting first surfaced in Britain in 1913. They report experts who studied the work for more than 30 years concluded it predates the original 16th century masterpiece by about a decade.
The smile is familiar, but the woman looks younger. The biggest difference seems to be the pillars on either side of her. Foundation members note sketches by da Vinci's apprentices also show the Mona Lisa flanked by pillars.
They say several documents mention the artist painted two versions, but some art historians are not convinced. They point out da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on wood and rarely used canvas. They maintain the other version is most likely a copy by an artist from a later era. A researcher at Oxford University says the look on the woman's face is nothing like the Mona Lisa smile.
